more Moonshadow: parts 3 & 4

Harvey's moon shadow mixes are deeply chilled-out, 3am outer-space epics. they involve smooth robots making love on the beach. They are great if you are interested in such activities as riding high, playing piano under the stars on LSD, and traveling to other planets in a cruise ship while drinking free mimosas. These mixes can easily serve to demonstrate everything important about being a good DJ. Here's the list: play good songs, play songs no one's ever heard before but are awesome, play songs in a good order. that's it.

Dj Harvey - Sarcastic Disco

One of the best mixes ever brought out by record labels. Kinda slow tempo-wise, but very funky and dreamy... prime vintage psychedelic downtempo disco.Wise selection of rare tracks. Almost every track is wonderful on its own and yet mixed so smooth and lovingly that makes it even sweeter. Only 1000 copies were put out (mostly in Japan). Lindstrom actually called this mix the "album of the century". A true classic.

Dj Harvey, is a DJ from Cambridge, England. He has achieved a following the world over including places such as Singapore and Japan. "Sir Coxsone" Dodd - King of The Soundsystem

Clement Seymour "Sir Coxsone" Dodd, CD (Kingston, Jamaica, January 26, 1932 – May 5, 2004) was a Jamaican record producer who was influential in the development of ska and reggae in the 1950s, 1960s and beyond. Dodd began running sound systems in 1954 after a short stint living in the U.S. exposed him to R&B music.
In the context of Jamaican popular culture, a sound system is a group of disc jockeys, engineers and MCs playing ska, rocksteady or reggae music. The sound system scene is generally regarded as an important part of Jamaican cultural history and as being responsible for the rise of several modern Jamaican musical genres. The sound system concept first became popular in the 1950s, in the ghettos of Kingston. DJs would load up a truck with a generator, turntables, and huge speakers and set up street parties. In the beginning, the DJs played American rhythm and blues music, but as time progressed and more local music was created, the sound migrated to a local flavor.

He went back to Jamaica with a few records and started the Downbeat Sound System. Dodd would import new records from Miami and New Orleans to play for eager Jamaican audiences. Dodd eventually set up five different sound systems, each playing nightly. He would hire other DJ's to run the parties including a young Lee "Scratch" Perry.

Eventually the R&B trend died out and Jamaicans began to record their own music in search of a new sound. It was around this time that Dodd met Roland Alfonso and Don Drummond, founding members of the Skatalites and began the legendary Studio One.

It would be at Studio One where a young Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer would get their start recording classic Ska and rock steady tunes like "Simmer Down".

"Sir Coxsone" went on to record a hefty amount of classic reggae, ska and rocksteady through out the 60's and 70's and started the careers of many of the genre's heavy weight artists. Unfortunately, like many famous record producers he was also a shister and would often under pay musicians. By any account the man is a legend, and would no doubt influence the evolution of Hip Hop via a young Jamaican transplant named Kool Herc.

Danny Tenaglia: Choice - A Collection of Classics

Having made a great start to the ‘Choice’ series with Frankie Knuckles and Francois K, Danny Tenaglia is a logical next step for the third round of Azuli’s surveys. And this is the best yet by some distance. New York’s finest has spent many a painstaking hour compiling and mixing the two sets, and boy does it show. With extensive notes from Bill Brewster and comments from Tenaglia on each track, his influences and thought processes are revealed, with the renewed conviction that it’s all about making people dance. And if you were in a club listening to this set, you’d be on the floor by the second track as the soft keyboard hook behind Imagination’s ‘Changes’ kicks in, with the fantastic layered vocals that follow. Other notable inclusions on the first disc are Designer Loops’ tribal ‘I Believe’, and a classic in Nomad’s (I Wanna Give You) Devotion’. Quality cuts from Christian Falk and Blaze lend a more soulful edge to proceedings. Disc two is just as uplifting, epitomised by the soaring trumpet of Hugh Masekela’s ‘Don’t Go Lose It Baby’, the urgent Loni Clark vocal in ‘Rushin’’ and the final big number, Jomanda’s ‘Make My Body Rock’, served with a hint of Uno Mas.In typical, Tenaglia lets the music breathe and gauges the build up of each mix to perfection. A fitting showcase for one of the world’s top jocks.

Francois K: Choice – A Collection of Classics

London's Azuli label followed Frankie Knuckles' contribution to the Choice: A Collection of Classics series in 2002 with another fine double-disc set of varied obscurities and bona fide classics selected by dance music luminary François K. François assembles a fun jumble of tunes (unencumbered by boundaries) that spans chronologically from the early '70s through the early '90s and sequences it with finesse. The subtitle of the series is a little misleading -- not all of these tracks are classics, at least not in above-ground non-dance communities. Though the average consumer might be a little miffed about the fact that this set isn't packed solid with instant jaw-droppers, a steady quality that serves the flow is kept throughout. Chicago house gets a fair representation with Frankie Knuckles' lewd Jamie Principle vocal number "Baby Wants to Ride," Lil' Louis' "Do U Love Me," and Fingers Inc.'s "Never No More Lonely" leading the way. Shalamar's opening "Right in the Socket" and Sylvester's "Over and Over" highlight the disco herd. Floor-friendly cuts from jazz figures (Donald Byrd's "Love Has Come Around," Deodato's "Super Strut") and R&B greats (Teddy Pendergrass' "Only You," René & Angela's "I Love You More") also play a prominent role. The packaging doesn't explicitly state the fact that each song appears in full -- a fact that no doubt appeals to dance aficionados who'd love to have some of these songs in their full glory, with great sound to boot. Though it's a compilation and not a mix, the track-to-track flow is natural and makes it all function as an enjoyable listen from beginning to end.

Martinez - Moon Harbour Inhouse Vol. 3

In age of microfocused tastes, rare is the album that can appeal to a multitude of clubland tribes. That's doubly true when it comes to label compilations. Nowadays, most labels tend to focus their output with laser-like precision, releasing tracks for the often-tiny niche market that sucks up their every release. Moon Harbour, upon first consideration, would seem to be such a label: Founded by Matthias Tanzmann in 2000, it definitely has a sound, one that wedges into the small, whirling eddy where throbby techno, deep house and tribal rhythms rush past each other. But it's from that spot, documented on the new Moon Harbour Inhouse Vol. 3 comp mixed by Martinez, that Moon Harbour sings a siren song that's capable of mesmerizing everyone from determined minimalists to fans of party-time Latin- and Afro-house rhythms.
