Steffi - Yours And Mine

Superbly clean and classic sounding debut album from Panorama Bar resident and all round House music dynamo, Steffi. Since 2000 Steffi has run the ace Klakson label with Dexter, responsible for the era defining releases 'I Don't Care', and since last year she's branched out with the Dolly label, home to vital vinyl from Dexter, Jakob Korn and Tyrez. Her own productions have only emerged in the last couple of years, landing on Ostgut Ton and UQ, showcasing a supple, simple and highly effective style of deeper modern house music. All nine cuts on 'Yours & Mine' are exclusive to the album, featuring two superior vocal tracks with Virginia (vocalist for Steve Bug and Abe Duque a.o), the Detroit-tempered 'Yours' and the deliciously moody 'You Own My Mind', next to the beautifully toned square bass workout 'Arms', the purposeful late night jack of 'Manic Moods' and the synthual Berlin sehnsucht of 'Nightspacer'. It' surely no overstatement to say this is one of the most beautifully accomplished releases on Ostgut Ton, and a total must have for fans of sophisticated, classically-informed Berlin House music.

Deep Sensation 3 Mixed by Nick Harris

Originally conceived as a booking agency in the early '90s, NRK evolved over time into one of the UK's most diverse and prolific house labels, releasing such assorted artists as DJ Qu, Kerri Chandler, Ame and Paul Woolford. The imprint has put out more than 100 12-inches over the years, all the while maintaining several compilation series, including Coast to Coast and Nite:Life. For his third Deep Sensation mix, Harris goes for a vibe that's both deep and classic, coursing through 14 selections from NRK's most recent output. As with previous editions, unmixed versions are included on a bonus disc.

A Glimpse of the Past...

Johnny Hammond - Gears

By the mid-'70s, the embracing and assimilation of soul and funk elements into the jazz vernacular had come full steam. Artists and producers from both communities were exchanging ideas and sounds that once again challenged jazz purists' definitions of what jazz "should" be. These collaborations were often scoffed at by academics and critics attempting to pigeonhole and quantify jazz into an academic exercise ripe with songbook predictability and sonic parameters. Thankfully, the record-buying public at large had the good sense to politely ignore these people and continue purchasing records with these new sounds, largely concocted by the production team of Larry and Fonce Mizell. This time around, their subject was Johnny "Hammond" Smith who proves to be more than up to the task of playing around and inside the Mizell's string arrangements which foreshadowed the early days of disco. In fact, two of the cuts found on Gears -- "Fantasy" and "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" -- were played extensively at the early Loft parties hosted by legendary DJ David Mancuso, as well as at the club many consider to be the true home of disco, the Paradise Garage in NYC. Gears starts off innocently enough with "Tell Me What To Do," which could have easily found its way on to a Donald Byrd album from this period, but then kicks into full steam with "Los Conquistadores Chocolates," a six-and-a-half-minute tour de force of funk, soul, jazz and disco all rolled into one. Hammond is in fine form throughout with crisp playing; never over improvising, but playing only what's necessary to help the music move along at a brisk pace. This is unquestionably another jewel in a treasure chest already filled with so many for the Mizell production team, and a great performance by Hammond to keep up with his contemporaries who refuse to be held back by conventional wisdom.

Superlongevity 5

Perlon round up 28 unreleased tracks from some of the world's most celebrated house and techno producers for 'Superlongevity 5'. Just one look at the tracklist will turn many a modern mnmlist to mush, because you just know that when Ricardo Villalobos, Bodycode, or Shackleton produce for Perlon, it's going to be some of their best gear. From the few listens we've had, a few tracks really stand out; Melchior Production Ltd's charmingly queer 'Vagabundo Nao'; the flustered fluctuations of Tobias' She'; a perky jacker from STL; Daniel Bell's dirty jack ting 'Deep Down'; the unterwelt drum ritual of Shackleton's 'Paper Throne'; the stunning rhythm dynamism of Villalobos' 'Guaguay'; Half Hawaii's spherical tech-house pop; the perpetual motions of Cassy's instantly infectious 'Magnificent Cat Won't Do'; the mournfully elegiac acid-house of Portable's 'Keep On'. Factor in loads more from Dandy Jack, San Proper, Soulphiction, Jabberjaw (Matthew Dear), Matt John and Margaret Dygas and it's bloody hard to ignore this set. The double CD set appears as a continuously mixed session.

We Love Space Sundays 10 - Mixed by Ralph Lawson

Ralph Lawson’s 20:20 Vision Summer mix CD was originally handed out to attendees of We Love Space’s closing party on Ibiza earlier this year.Lawson mixed the second edition to the We Love series to coincide with a monthly residency at Space, during which he debuted the 2020Soundsystem live show at the famous Ibizan club. The mix itself represents a neat cross section of where 20:20 Vision is at in 2010 – you get a smidgen of disco dirt such Ray Mang’s deep groove remix of 20:20 Sound System and Crazy P. Hector’s “AGE”, a brilliant ode to bouncing Chicago jack is perhaps one of this years unappreciated gems and is followed by Glimpse’s melodically perfect remix of Simon Baker. Julian Chaptal’s boompty refix of Melohman & Javi Bora and Mark Broom’s “People” reps the more minimalist coat tails of 20:20 Vision whilst there’s room for some icons in the shape of Layo & Bushwhacka and Blaze.
