Martinez - Moon Harbour Inhouse Vol. 3

In age of microfocused tastes, rare is the album that can appeal to a multitude of clubland tribes. That's doubly true when it comes to label compilations. Nowadays, most labels tend to focus their output with laser-like precision, releasing tracks for the often-tiny niche market that sucks up their every release. Moon Harbour, upon first consideration, would seem to be such a label: Founded by Matthias Tanzmann in 2000, it definitely has a sound, one that wedges into the small, whirling eddy where throbby techno, deep house and tribal rhythms rush past each other. But it's from that spot, documented on the new Moon Harbour Inhouse Vol. 3 comp mixed by Martinez, that Moon Harbour sings a siren song that's capable of mesmerizing everyone from determined minimalists to fans of party-time Latin- and Afro-house rhythms.

Wolf + Lamb vs. Soul Clap - DJ Kicks: 5 Years At The Marcy

We’ve never been to one of Wolf + Lamb’s alarmingly intimate—we’re talking 50 people, tops—Marcy Hotel parties, but here’s what Ghostly International founder Sam Valenti IV had to say about them the other day: “The Marcy Hotel is a tangible manifestation of the Wolf + Lamb ethos. Reverential to history, though perfectly tweaked, with a detail and character that is distinctly their own. The space is the party, is the label, is the music.”

Come to think of it, maybe we should just let the following mix speak for itself. Available as a DJ-Kicks bonus disc at indie shops overseas, “5 Years At the Marcy” is a fitting tribute to watching the sun come up among Omar-S, Kate Bush, Jay-Z, and a room full of your nearest—and soon to be dearest—friends. Not to mention the perfect complement to the main event itself, a friends and family sparring session with the duo’s labelmates/Marcy Hotel regulars Soul Clap.

Get your own loft party started after the jump, alongside the most thorough track-by-track breakdown of a DJ mix we’ve ever run…

Efdemin - Chicago

Though still composing the kind of breathy, open vista deep house associated with the city that lends the record its name, Chicago functions on a slightly wider narrative arc than Phillip Sollman's (aka Efdemin) debut, further incorporating elements of minimalism, jazz and even prime mid-'00s microhouse into his textured sound. The result is an intimate and meticulous work that's sometimes slow to reveal its charms. Instruments like zither, organ, vocal shards, cello, flutes, pipes, both live and machine drums emerge in shady, half-formed patterns only to slip beneath the surface again, a quick poke of sound or melody in Sollmann's articulate whole.

Kuniyuki Takahashi - Dancing In The Naked City

Since 2005, Kuniyuki Takahashi has released over a dozen records on Mule, and Walking in the Naked City will be his third full-length release. Kuniyuki recruited a number of guest appearances for the album, including jazz pianist Fumio Itabashi and frequent collaborator Henrik Schwarz, who lends his rarely heard vocal talents to the track "Once Again." Like much of Kuniyuki's work in the past, Walking in the Naked City balances jazz and world music aesthetics with a deep house production style. The record's overall vibe is soulful and organic, with flutes, natural percussion and piano complimenting Kuniyuki's crisp electronic sounds.

Future Disco Vol. 4 - Neon Nights

It might have been considered a passing trend and nothing more by some, but it is remarkable to see how the whole nü-disco scene has established itself as a viable alternative to the old-school disco revival epitomized by the Horse Meat Disco bunch and the deep house inclination privileged by the likes of Mule Musiq. You could even say that by taking things down a notch or two, nü-disco has even paved the way for the current interest in all things slow such as the aforementioned Jaar. The names may be unfortunate, but Underground Disco and Future Disco have overall got it right.
